Nov. 4, 2008

Yesterday I took Gavin with me to vote. Peyton was rather upset that he didn't get to go along too, but I had no idea what to expect at this polling location since I had never been there before. It ended up being staffed with white-haired ladies and although the parking lot was full, the line was very short. There was a toy lying in the middle of the floor and as we waited we discovered a dog lying in a little bed in the corner. Only in rural America!

I fully expected paper ballots and was surprised to find computerized voting machines in a small township building surrounded by farms, trees, and narrow black-topped roads. Gavin helped me make my selections and we both got our stickers.

As we were driving back home we got to see a stunning pink sunset and beautiful rolling hills. I truly wish I had had a camera to capture the moment. I began talking about the privilege of voting and the fact that we can vote in safety. Surrounded by such peace, tranquility, and beauty, it made me truly appreciate those things as well.

Although I am not pleased with the results, I know God is in control and knows exactly what He is doing. This was no surprise or mistake. Perhaps this is what we need to provoke us to be better witnesses and prayer warriors.

I am concerned about the next four years, particularly for the unborn and the future of my children. The question really is, will we sit and wring our hands and complain or will we spread God's word and transform the culture around us? We may have lost the battle, but ultimately we will not lose the war.
