Missions Moments

In my previous post I said I would mention some other appropriate items to add to your church's missionary closet. I am realizing maybe I'm making an assumption as many churches don't even have one. There is one item I really want to mention though, as it can also be used as a gift during missions conference or for Christmas/birthdays (assuming they are on deputation or furlough).

And that is...gift cards. When we were in seminary I was part of the ladies' missionary fellowship at our church. They would give out gift bags to the missionaries during missions conference and I would often think, "Where are they supposed to put all this stuff in their vehicle?" and "Do they really need new towels?" Okay, maybe some missionaries do need new towels, but I would have to say that is not top on my priority list right now!

So one year I suggested gift cards and the idea took root. They then announced in the bulletin that we were collecting gift cards of all denominations from a variety of locations. What are pros of gifts cards? In no particular order --- 1. They are small. 2. It's as good as cash. 3. They aren't considered taxable income. 4. No paper work is required on the part of the missionary. 5. They allow the missionary to buy what he/she really needs or wants (maybe a new towel? :} ). There is one main con which can easily be avoided - a lack of that store, etc. where they live or are traveling. If you or your church sticks with the basics such as Walmart, major department stores, restaurants such as Cracker Barrel, McDonalds, Applebees, etc., and national gas station chains such as BP or Citgo, the missionary should be able to put them to good use. Some restaurant gift cards are good at multiple locations so they can be used at a variety of places.

Enough about missionary closets for now. I have some other topics brewing after our two trips!

These are (of course) really great ideas; I'll definitely recommend this to our associate pastor's wife (she's in charge of our mission's closet).
