Mr. Munch Update

Oh dear, I think we have a potential catastrophe on our hands. Yesterday evening I decided to get Mr. Munch some more milkweed since he only had one leaf left. That didn't seem to bother him and he kept munching away. Then late last night I couldn't find him on either plant and discovered him on the top of the enclosure. I got all excited thinking this was the big moment when he would hang himself upside down in preparation for coming out of his skin.

Well, I went to bed around midnight and he was still on the top with no apparent action other than some webby type threads here and there along the placement of his body.

This morning he's still in the exact same place - still not hanging upside down like he should.

I've built up the excitement of this quite a bit with the boys. I even let them get out of bed last night so they could see that he was on the top. Now I'm not quite sure what to tell them, especially since I don't even know if he is alive or not!

Do not give up hope, Adele! Sometimes it takes a few days for them to finally form their chrysallis (sp?). Anyway, we had two monarch caterpillars this past summer, and they both hatched into beautiful butterflies. On the other hand, we captured a fuzzy caterpillar, too, and he ended up dying, so, only time will tell . . . :-)
