This afternoon Jason plans to sign Gavin up for the YMCA youth soccer program. I can't believe I have a child old enough to be playing in organized sports. We have been mulling over the options for a while now - put him in soccer, put him in hockey, don't put him in anything?
The pro for hockey was that it is the ultimate sport in Slovakia - good culture shock preparation. The cost eliminated it. For some reason Jason thought it was free. Nope - $175 plus you have to sell $50 worth of raffle tickets for a four-wheeler. Not my cup of tea. I also don't mind watching hockey, but wasn't quite sure I wanted MY son to PLAY it. Just my luck he'd end up loving it and cost us thousands of dollars in dental bills.
Not putting him in anything was the cheapest and easiest option, but we know that as our schedule gets crazy it will be harder to put the kids into anything. We decided this might be our only chance. As it is he'll be missing a game and maybe a practice due to meetings.
Soccer is also played in Slovakia and is fairly important around here. Many of our good soccer players in college were from this state or MI. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. The season is shorter than hockey (only six weeks or so), the cost is cheaper, and hopefully he will endure less bodily harm. I'm not completely confident of that though after finding out a girl from our previous church dislocated her knee in a soccer game a week ago and had to have surgery! Also, it's my favorite sport -not to watch, but to play. I always enjoyed intra-mural indoor soccer in college, though I know I certainly wasn't a star player!
I was hoping to take him outside last night or today to do some practicing for tomorrow's evaluation. Yesterday I spent the majority of the afternoon, evening, and night on my feet in the kitchen dealing with tomatoes, peppers, green beans, and zucchini. So, no practice. Today we woke up to a rainy day. So, no practice. This could be interesting!
I am now searching on Ebay for used equipment. A little late to be sure, but we didn't make up our minds until Wednesday night (nothing like procrastinating). So far I've got a bid on some soccer shorts and I'm watching some shin guards and cleats. Any suggestions on brands/types of shin guards that work best? Do cleats run true to size or do they tend to be small? Do I need to allow extra room for the socks? Is it better to get shin guards that strap on or that just insert in the sock? Oh dear, there is so much to think about!
Well, at least I already have the mini-van. :)
