Jason and I got the opportunity to spend an evening together last Tuesday night. It was a complete surprise to me. I found out on Monday we were going out. Then about a half hour before we were supposed to leave I discovered a suitcase on the bed with some of Jason's things packed in it. Thanks to the terrible weather, and ensuing nasty roads, Jason decided to get a hotel, so we got to spend even more time together.
First he took me to a very nice restaurant about an hour south of us. We were the only diners for the first half an hour or so. Jason ordered a seafood platter and I ordered steak filets which were so tender and yummy even those words do not describe them properly. We haven't been eating out much since Jason hasn't started working yet, so it was a nice treat.
We then drove to the "big city", arriving about an hour earlier than we needed to. We spotted a Starbucks while we were walking and decided to split two desserts and a warming, delicious apple cider drink with whipped cream on top.
The big event of the evening was seeing the broadway show The Lion King. Unknown to me, Jason had bought tickets for the show around Christmas time. The costuming is quite unique and intricate and we got an up close view since at the beginning the animals walk down the aisles, singing (and we had aisle seats!). Although the story line is familiar, some of the songs are different and several of the actors were truly captivating as they portrayed their "animal".
After the show we drove to our hotel. The room was on the cool side so Jason quickly jumped into the bed fully dressed and turned the t.v. on. I decided to give the room a better once-over and I'm so glad I did! I discovered a used shampoo bottle in the shower, one of the soaps was open, and there was toothpaste in the sink! Although the beds did not look slept in, the floor did not look like it had been vacuumed (you would have loved that, Mare!). I told Jason I didn't want to pay money for a room that looked like it had been used, so he called the front desk. They told us they would move us to a new room. When we walked out into the hall, the man told us there was no record of our room ever having been cleaned, so my suspicions were correct! Yuck!
The new room was clean, thankfully, but it was even colder than the first because the heat was not turned on. Our feet hurt when we walked on the bathroom floor because the tile was so chilly! We ended up shivering under the covers, fully dressed, watching t.v. since we couldn't get to sleep in the cold. We certainly have a knack for getting rooms with drastic temperature issues.
I'm not quite sure when it warmed up in our room, but by morning it was comfortable. We quickly got ready, then enjoyed a complimentary continental breakfast of waffles, hard boiled eggs, and Danishes.
Thankfully the roads were better on the way home than they had been going down. They were still a little treachorous at times, but the Lord guided us safely home.
It was nice to have an evening/night out with my hubby before the baby comes. I knew it was probably our last hoorah, so I tried to savor every moment (even the frigid ones!).

Dellie - you are so right! I would not have been able to shake the ickies if I was put in a room that had not been cleaned. Oh, & I would so not put my bare feet on the floor!!! I know I'm a massive germophobe, but I just can't help it. I would have been in trouble in the cold room too, b/c I hate to use their blankets ;-)
You guys really do have the most interesting time with things, don't you? At least it makes for good blog fodder ;) So glad it ended well and you were able to make the most of your time out together :~)
