Last Wednesday we dove into the school year. I am using the K-4 A Beka curriculum which I purchased in various lots on Ebay, saving some money.
This year is going a lot more smoothly than last year now that Gavin is better about following directions and following a line of thought. The beginning pages are actually quite easy for him and some of the subjects don't start until Lesson 6, so we've been finishing up some of the last pages in his K-3 math book. He likes "doing school" so that's wonderful!
Today's accomplishment was being able to tell me what sound the letter "I" makes. Up until now he's been saying "aaah" for "A". He knows what letter it is and know which word goes with it, but just couldn't remember the sound. I was really excited that he got it today. He also started writing capital and little "i" today too. He's already been writing it in his name, but we worked on the how of writing of them rather than just getting it to look like the letter.
Peyton likes to join in, which is a little distracting at times. At the same time, I know it will be good for him to get this early exposure. I have a K-2 math book, so I've been giving him a page to color when he wants to join in. He actually is singing some of the Bible songs and saying parts of the Bible verse. He wants to copy his big brother!
It certainly does take some discipline to homeschool, especially since preschool isn't required. Last year we did pretty well with K-3 until after Christmas. We had a hard time getting back into the groove after the holidays. This year I hope to remain as consistent as possible even though we will be facing many changes in the next nine months (including moving in Nov.).
Here are my main educational goals for the year:
1. To identify all letters (capital and small)
2. To give the sound for all letters.
3. To write all letters in the alphabet.
4. To identify numbers 1-20, tens, and one hundred.
5. To write numbers 1-20, tens, and one hundred.
6. To recite the weekly Bible verses from the curriculum and AWANA.
This may change over the coming months as I see what we've accomplished and if we should add new goals!

Good for you guys! Wow, I had no clue there was such a thing as a K-2 curriculum! I'll have to check that out because Chloe is so incredibly apt at learning letters and such (she's been able to identify all the capital letters since about 20 mos.). I want to be careful not to be overly pushy about school stuff with her though. I don't want it to lose that fun factor but I think she would thrive with some focused schoolish work. What do you think?
