It is somewhat daunting to have a child who is nearing the age of salvation accountability. We don't want to push or prod for fear that Gavin will make a decision based on wanting to do what we want him to do. At the same time, we do try to discuss it with him when anything related to the topic arises so that he will learn about his need for a personal relationship with Christ.
Yesterday afternoon I was lying on our bed with the boys. Gavin and I began a little spiritual discussion. I don't even remember how it got started. What I do remember is this question.
"When will I stop sinning?"
Wow! I never expected that question. Of course we all wish we could stop sinning - to stop repeating the same sins over and over.
The answer is really two-fold. I explained that we won't stop sinning until we go to Heaven, but I also had to discuss the fact that unless a person accepts Christ as his/her Savior they won't go to Heaven. Lest he think we can just keep doing wrong things throughout life, I also mentioned that we should do what we can to follow what God would want us to do so that we don't commit as many sins. Salvation certainly isn't an excuse to live life how we want.
The wheels do seem to be turning. Not only is this is a big responsibility, it is also a blessing as well. I do hope that Jason or myself get the opportunity to lead him to the Lord, though I know that is a little selfish. Until then we'll continue to provoke conversation and answer questions - completing the planting and watering necessary for reaping.
