Yesterday at the grocery store, Gavin spotted some watermelons. After declaring his sincere love for watermelon, he asked me if we could buy one. Since they were on sale and what four year old asks for fruit over cookies or candy, I figured it would be a worthwhile purchase.
Of course there is one problem. I'm not always completely sure when to buy these types of fruits. Musk melon, cantaloupe, watermelon, etc. have me a little stumped. The skin doesn't do a lot to reveal the goodness within and you can't see what's on the inside until you cut it open.
I thought I had heard that you should thump on a watermelon and it should sound hollow. I dutifully raised it to my ear and gave it a solid tapping.
"Is there watermelon inside?" Gavin queried.
I really should figure out the proper way to determine ripeness before I thoroughly confuse my children.

Hee hee! I can totally see Gavin's serious face as he asks you if there really is watermelon in there. So funny!
That is hilarious! I'm going to remember that line the next time my mom thumps a melon. She'll get a laugh out of it!
