This morning, very early, I was up nursing Dawson. He had gotten up at 1:00 to eat, then again at 4:00. Obviously getting up in the middle of the night to feed someone and change their diaper is not the most fun of activities.
BUT, as I was checking my fb account, I saw on someone's status that they were sad for the Steven Curtis Chapman family. I wondered what had happened so I Googled his name. No matter where you fall in the world of Christian music, we should all be holding this family up in prayer right now. His teenage son accidentally hit and killed their adopted, 5 year old daughter, Maria, on Wednesday.
On this web site http://www.mlive.com/news/index.ssf/2008/05/musician_steven_curtis_chapman.html, you can see a video of him singing his song entitled, "Cinderella", which he wrote as a reminder to himself to cherish the moments with his young daughters and even his older children. I had never heard it before, but with what just happened to his family in mind, the message is even more poignant. After the song he explains how the song was born and what motivated him to write it.
No, feeding Dawson at 4:00 (and getting up with him to change two dirty diapers at 6:00) is not "fun". But these moments will not last forever. We know the months and years roll by quickly until our children are 18 or go away to college. Do we think about the fact that they may never reach the age of 18? We may not have them with us five years from now. Maybe not even two months from now.
This tragic event in the Chapman's lives was a good reminder to me. Slow down. Enjoy the little things. Enjoy the "unfun" things too. Enjoy them, because some day, maybe sooner than we'd like, they'll be gone.
