Swim, Little Fishy

Gavin is thoroughly enjoying his swimming lessons. He is becoming quite the little fish, though they don't do a whole lot of swimming at this point. He wants to stay longer and swim and I know he is going to be thoroughly disappointed when they are over.

He is in a 3-5 yr. old preschool class, which was broken up into three groups. He was put into level 1 of this group (why in the world do they have to give them numbers? whatever happened to the guppies, blue gills, and dolphins?). This means he is in the same group as a girl who doesn't want to be too adventurous in the water and a little boy who just plain doesn't want to follow instructions. The 2nd level seems to be focusing on mainly the same skills so I'm not too concerned about that. I did talk to the coordinator today though (yes, I'm a mom sticking up for her son) because the little boy who doesn't want to participate is holding the other two back. The little girl is becoming more confident and Gavin wants to swim all over the entire pool (two days in WI Dells sure gave him some confidence!). This actually causes some safety concerns because the other two take off and little J--- is still doing his own thing on the other side of the pool! Who does the instructor follow? More than once there has been an unattended child and that makes me a little nervous. She actually brought that up and I was thankful she is realizes it as well.

The coordinator was very understanding and said the instructor was supposed to be talking to the grandmother today about the situation. She also said she might put another instructor in the group so that one could stay with J--- while the other worked with the other two kids. I guess having parents approach me the wrong way while teaching helped me to be a little more diplomatic and to look at it from their perspective. I honestly just want Gavin to actually learn something, which he should since we paid the same amount of money!

But, when all is said and done, I know it's more about him having fun and gaining more confidence in the water, than being able to swim laps in a pool. Though, that would be nice!
