Another Night, Another Orphan

A little girl, a dark curl,
snuggled in a tattered quilt.
Oblivious to all around her,
Does she know?

Another discovery, another face,
one of many, nothing new.
A name and birthday given,
Are they right?

Truth is sought, rarely found,
mommy, daddy, sibling gone
Not a family to embrace her,
Where are they?

Many days, more nights,
breathing, eating, sleeping,
but not really, truly living.
Will it end?

Strong hands, tender face,
hugging, kissing, cooing,
strangers, but not for long.
Is this love?

New things, new experiences,
a bath, clean clothes, a toy,
but nothing compared to this.
Are you mine?

Others wait, others cry;
a home, safety, true Life,
hoping for a chance.
Will you go?
