That is how I felt on Saturday when I canned the remaining pears. I let them get good and ripe for this batch (some were a little too ripe!) and it cut down on the cooking time A LOT! It also made them easier to cut in half. I got a good arm work out turning the food mill, which I had borrowed from a lady in our church. If there is a useful kitchen gadget for just about anything, Liz has it.
My original batch Gavin polished off. The second batch gave me four jars and the pears I did on Saturday gave me eight more jars with a little extra to enjoy right away. So now we have twelve jars to enjoy over the winter, though I'm sure a few will never survive that long and one will be going to Liz, who lent me her food mill. I never could have made all that sauce without it.
Hopefully the Concord grapes will be ready for picking soon so I can make jelly. This will be my first attempt at it, so we'll see how that goes. Arlene, the woman who has all of the fruit connections, told me to follow the instructions exactly or the whole batch will flop. That makes me nervous!
